Adventures in Edible Paint

I have had a few people ask me about the pictures I posted on Instagram of Libby “painting” with edible paint.

Main 3 Questions:

1. Are you crazy?

2. Was it messy?

3. How did you did do it?

The first 2 questions are easy…YES! But it was SO fun and worth it. The third question is also easy…it was EASY!

Since I have been able to start staying home with Libby I have been researching some different fun but learning activities to do with her through out the day…especially since it has been so stinkin’ HOT the last couple of weeks down here and you pretty much can’t walk outside anymore without Libby getting a heat rash. SO all that said…one of the things I saw was Edible Paint. You can show colors, how two colors can make a different color, use blocks as a stamp and show shapes, let them feel a super weird texture…so much learning can take place with this one activity.

A lot of people don’t think that a one year old can learn all these things so early-but babies are sponges and are ALWAYS learning. You can never start too early teaching them.

So here is how the painting went down (which by the way only lasted about…MAYBE…10 minutes total…maybe….)

I got the idea here…http://abunchofkeys.blogspot.com/2010/08/painting-with-condensed-milk.html

If I were to do it again I would try this version…http://theimaginationtree.com/2011/03/homemade-edible-finger-paint-recipe.html just to see which I liked better….if I try it this week I will let ya know how it goes 🙂

Step 1: Undress baby

Step 2: Put trash bag around high chair so the fabric doesn’t get super messy (if using high chair for this which I highly recommend)

Step 3: Put any kind of paper (I used white so that the colors could be seen best) on tray or table and use painters tape to hold paper down.

Step 4: Pour condensed milk into separate containers and use food coloring to make color of your choosing.

Step 5: Pour some “paint” onto paper and let baby have at it!

I talked about the colors, used blocks and showed her how to put it in paint and put it back on the paper etc.

Obviously I have a 12 1/2 month old…so it mostly all went to the mouth but you’ve gotta start somewhere! 🙂 Be brave moms…give it a try! The mess is worth it…and honestly…super easy to clean up. If you don’t have time for a bath afterwards though…I would wait until there is time for one 🙂

Here are a few pics from our painting adventure…
